European Motorhome Adventure | Touring Ideas
Day three of our European adventure was, quite simply, a day of firsts.
And when we say firsts, we really mean FIRSTS.
We didn’t travel anywhere today. We didn’t move the motorhome. We didn’t tick off another European destination. Instead, we stayed exactly where we were at La Combia campsite and discovered that sometimes the best adventures happen when you stop rushing around.
And, apparently, when you stop wearing clothes. 😂
A Very Different Start to the Day
We woke up late again – around 9am for Suzanne and about half past nine for me. Suzanne had already sorted breakfast, which consisted of pain au chocolat and a huge cup of tea.
So far, so normal.
Then came the first big decision of the day.
We sat outside the motorhome without getting dressed.
Now, this might not sound particularly revolutionary, but for us it was a proper bucket-list moment. We'd talked about doing it, and suddenly we thought, Why not?
It was liberating, surprisingly relaxing and, once we'd done it, neither of us particularly wanted to put our clothes back on!
The morning was a little cloudy, although still warm, and we'd had a bit of rain overnight. Suzanne got some washing done while I dug the bikes out from the back of the motorhome.
Things were definitely becoming more relaxed.
A Lazy Lunch – French Camping Style
For lunch we put together a rather lovely little picnic: cheese, sausage, crisps, olives, tomatoes and some other bits and pieces.
We'd spotted people doing something similar at the campsite pub and thought we'd give it a go ourselves.
It was simple, but absolutely delicious.
There really is something about sitting outside your motorhome, picking at food and having nowhere you need to be.
Although, obviously, we were still naked.
This was becoming a theme.
Taking the Dogs for a Walk… Into the Woods! 🌲🐶
After lunch we decided it was time to take Tilley and Frankie for a proper walk.
The campsite has a little wooded area, so off we went.
And yes…
We walked through the woods completely naked.
Apart from our shoes.
Because apparently even we have standards. 😂
It was another first and, once again, surprisingly liberating. We headed off on a walk of around 4 kilometres, enjoying the peace and quiet while the dogs did what dogs do best – sniff absolutely everything.
Then they spotted the fishing pond.
And, naturally, they jumped straight in.
Unfortunately, there were people actually fishing.
So while we were enjoying our liberating woodland experience, the dogs decided to add a little embarrassment to proceedings.
Thanks, girls. 🐶😂
The Campsite Slip & Slide
Back at the campsite, we discovered the kids enjoying a homemade-looking water slide.
Basically, it was a huge sheet of black plastic, held down with sandbags, with someone spraying it with a hosepipe.
Kids were running, jumping and sliding down it while their parents watched.
It actually looked like brilliant fun.
We resisted the temptation.
For once.
Naked Cycling… Yes, Really! 🚲😂
Next up was the recycling.
We needed to find the recycling area, so we jumped on the bikes.
There was just one small detail.
We were still naked.
Other people were cycling around the campsite without clothes on, so at least we didn't feel completely out of place.
The biggest challenge was working out how to get on and off the bike without revealing absolutely everything to everyone.
Somehow, I managed it.
Pride intact.
Just about.
We dropped off the recycling and then headed towards the campsite swimming pool.
The Pool – Where Swimming Costumes Were Apparently Optional
The pool had a sign saying no swimming costumes.
Which was rather handy because we'd already committed to the theme of the day.
So into the pool we went.
Everyone was completely naked, all different shapes and sizes, and surprisingly, nobody cared.
It was relaxed, respectful and incredibly chilled out. There were families there, kids playing and people simply enjoying themselves.
We had a swim, relaxed in the sunshine and spent some time sunbathing afterwards.
It was probably one of the most relaxed afternoons we've had in a very long time.
Homemade Burgers & a Bottle of Riesling 🍔🍷
By around 7:30pm, we decided it was time to head back to the motorhome and make some dinner.
Tonight's menu?
Homemade burgers, fries and homemade herb mayonnaise.
Add a bottle of Riesling and you've got yourself a pretty decent campsite dinner.
Of course, just as we were enjoying the evening, Tilley and Frankie decided something in the darkness was worth chasing.
Possibly a squirrel.
Possibly a rat.
Either way, they were off!
Never a dull moment with these two.
So, What's the Plan?
One of the other useful things we've done today is start thinking about how we're going to tackle the rest of our European adventure.
Our original idea was to travel from point to point, stopping at places along the way.
But we're already realising that if we try to do too much, the journey could become quite bitty and stressful – particularly as we head through Switzerland and Austria towards Berchtesgaden.
So we're changing our approach slightly.
If we arrive somewhere around early afternoon and like it, we'll stay.
If we fancy another day, we'll stay two nights.
But we're thinking two nights will probably be our maximum at most places.
Unless, of course, we find somewhere with a lake where we can get the paddleboards out and actually do something.
Because, despite what today might suggest, we are normally quite busy people!
We're not particularly good at sitting still.
But these couple of days at La Combia have been exactly what we needed. A chance to slow down, relax and properly defrag before getting back on the road.
Crossing France – One Day or Two?
We're also debating how we're going to tackle the journey across France.
Do we do it in one big push?
Or break it into two days?
At the moment, we're leaning towards taking two days.
It should mean less stress, more time to actually see something along the way and, importantly, potentially avoid spending an entire day driving through France in temperatures of around 30°C.
That sounds much more appealing to us.
So we'll see what tomorrow brings.
Day Three: Definitely One to Remember!
So there we have it.
Day three of our European motorhome adventure.
We didn't travel anywhere.
We didn't visit a famous landmark.
We didn't tick another country off the list.
But we did something much more important.
We slowed down.
We relaxed.
We spent time together.
We walked the dogs.
We swam.
We cycled.
We ate well.
And, apparently, we spent most of the day naked.
😂
We've even got photographic and video evidence of today's adventures.
Don't worry.
We're not sharing it.
Some things are best left to the imagination!
Tomorrow we'll pick ourselves up, work out the next part of our route and see where this European adventure takes us next.
