The Biggest Upgrade to Our Motorhome for Europe? Our Off-Grid Power System!

When we started planning our long European motorhome adventure, we knew we'd have to make a few big investments. One of the biggest wasn't a new gadget or luxury accessory—it was something that would completely change the way we travel.

We decided to invest in a new off-grid power system.

Now, that might not sound particularly exciting, but if it means spending more nights in beautiful free stopovers instead of expensive campsites, it suddenly becomes a lot more interesting!

Why We Decided to Upgrade

Our original setup worked perfectly well for weekends and shorter trips.

We had:

• A standard leisure battery

• A 20W solar panel

• A 300W inverter (from Lidl)

It did exactly what we needed at the time. We could charge phones, power a few small items, and generally get by without any issues.

But this trip is different.

We're going to be away for an extended period, and we want to use appliances that simply weren't possible with our old setup—things like the air fryer, microwave, fans and other household comforts.

Unfortunately, our original battery and inverter just weren't up to the job.

Going Bigger... Much Bigger!

As anyone who knows me will tell you, if I'm going to upgrade something, I don't tend to do things by halves!

So we've installed:

• A 314Ah lithium battery

• A 4kW inverter

• An additional 200W of portable folding solar panels

I'll admit it...

A 4kW inverter is probably overkill!

But it does mean we'll have plenty of capacity and won't need to worry about what we can run. It converts the 12V power stored in the battery into 240V, allowing us to use many of the same appliances we'd use at home.

The lithium battery also has Bluetooth monitoring, so we can check battery levels and power usage from our phones. Did we need Bluetooth? Probably not... but it is quite nice to have!

Why Portable Solar Panels?

One option was to fit even more solar panels permanently to the roof.

In the end, we chose a 200W portable folding solar panel instead.

There were a couple of reasons for that:

• We already have roof-mounted panels that charge the motorhome's leisure battery.

• Portable panels can be positioned in full sun while the motorhome sits in the shade.

• We didn't want to permanently bolt even more expensive equipment onto the roof.

The portable panels charge the new lithium battery independently, giving us a dedicated off-grid power system.

Why Not Just Buy a Portable Power Station?

Looking back, buying something like a Jackery or EcoFlow power station might have been the simpler option.

Everything comes neatly packaged together, and setup would certainly have been easier.

But I do like building things myself and understanding exactly how everything works, so we went down the DIY route instead.

Time will tell whether that was the right decision!

The Real Reason Behind the Investment

This wasn't about having fancy technology.

It was about saving money.

Campsites across Europe can be expensive:

• Switzerland: around £60 per night

• Austria: not far behind

• France: typically £30–£40 per night

If our upgraded power system means we can stay at more free motorhome stopovers (aires) instead of paying for electric hook-ups every night, the savings could be significant.

In fact, over the course of the trip, we're hoping the system will largely pay for itself.

We've Already Tested It

We actually had an unexpected test before leaving.

During a recent weekend away, the campsite's electricity kept tripping because of the fridge.

Rather than panic, we switched everything over to 12V and managed the whole weekend without any real problems.

It gave us a lot more confidence that this new setup should cope with whatever Europe throws at us.

Was It Worth It?

That's the million-pound question!

Right now, we're excited to see how it performs over several months of travelling.

By the end of the trip, we'll have a much clearer picture of whether:

• the investment paid for itself,

• the extra weight and cost were justified,

• and whether we'd recommend this type of setup to other motorhome owners.
